Simple Ribbed Socks

I’ve been asked to share some form of sock pattern for quite a while, so today I thought I would share my favorite – a simple ribbed sock. I love this style because it can fit almost any size foot, thanks to the natural stretchiness of ribbing!

Sizes
Women’s (Men’s)

Materials
100 g of fingering weight yarn
Size US 2 (2.75 mm) needles
Stitch markers

Abbreviations
K: knit
P: purl
CO: cast on
PM: place marker
Rep: repeat
Rnd: round
RS: right side
Sl1: slip one stitch purlwise
Ssk: slip, slip, knit – slip the first stitch knitwise, slip the second stitch knitwise, then knit both stitches together.
K2tog: knit two together – knit the next two stitches together as if they were one stitch.
P2tog: purl two together – purl the next two stitches together as if they were one stitch
St: stitch
Sts: stitches
WS: wrong side

Leg
Using the German Twisted Cast On, CO 64 (72) sts. Join rnd.
Rnd 1: k1, p2, *k2, p2; rep from * to last st, k1.

Rep Rnd 1 until piece measures 6″ (7″) (or desired length)

Heel Flap
The heel flap is worked back and forth on the first 32 (36) sts of the next round.

Row 1 (RS): *sl1, k1; rep from * to the end of the flap.
Row 2 (WS): sl1, p to end of the flap.

Rep rows 1 and 2 18 times (36 rows), ending on a WS row.

Heel Turn
Row 1 (RS): sl1, k17 (19), ssk, k1, turn work.
Row 2 (WS): sl1, p5, p2tog, p1, turn work.

Continue working in this manner:
Each RS row: sl1, k to one st before gap, ssk, k1, turn.
Each WS row: sl1, p to one st before gap, p2tog, p1, turn.

Until all stitches have been worked. Knit to end of flap (on RS).

Gusset
Pick up 18 sts along edge of heel flap. PM to mark the beginning of the leg sts. Work the leg sts as established. PM to mark the end of the leg sts. Pick up 18 sts along second edge of heel flap. PM to mark the new beginning of your rounds.

Rnd 1: k to 3 sts before 1st marker, k2tog, k1, sm, k32 (36) leg sts as established, sm, k1, ssk, k to end of rnd.
Rnd 2: k to 1st marker, sm, k32 (36) leg sts as established, sm, k to end of rnd.

Rep Rnds 1 and 2 until 32 (36) sts remain in the gusset/heel section for a total of 64 (72) sts.

Foot
Continue working the leg sts as established, and knit all the sts on the bottom of the foot. Stop knitting when you are approximately 2″ short of your desired length.

Toe
I will be referring to the needle on the top of the sock as needle 1, and the needle on the bottom of the sock as needle 2.

Rnd 1:
needle 1: knit
needle 2: knit

Rnd 2:
needle 1: k1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.
needle 2: k1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.

Rep Rnds 1-2 until 12 sts remain on each needle for a total of 24 sts.

Kitchener Remaining Stitches, and weave in all ends.

    thank you for this, your sock looks great. i have knit a couple pair of socks but i always freeze up on the heel flap, not sure why. i found your youtube channel and got your blog addy from there. will be following you for sure.
